Athens is the historical capital of Europe, with a long history. Often referred to as the cradle of Western civilization, Athens is a 2,500-year-old hotch-potch of concrete upon brick upon stone. Since 2004, the newly-inaugurated Archaeological Promenade, a tree-lined, traffic-free walkway that skirts the foot of the Acropolis and links all the city's major archaeological sites, has made the city centre infinitely more walkable.

Today, Greece's capital offers much more than just ancient monuments. Today, Greece's contemporary capital boasts one of the most happening nightlife scenes in Europe, from the newly generated districts of Psirri and Gazi, with their modern tavernas, slick bars and experimental dance clubs, to the sophisticated lounge-bars in up-market Kolonaki and the alternative rock clubs of bohemian Exarhia.
