Gordon and the Gang on tour 2012

Its hard to believe that another year has passed and Im putting the finishing touches to my trip to Australia. On the 10th June I will be flying out to Perth WA ,for ATE which is the largest international trade show in the southern hemisphere. Tourism Australia do a sterling job of organising people from all over the globe to converge in Australia for this annual event. Before the hard work starts we are having a little break first. We are flying up to Ningaloo reef to see what this part of Western Australia has to offer. One of the highlights is we are hoping to swim with the whale sharks off the reef. I have just paid for my air tickets and I am waiting for the final confirmations coming through for hotels and tours .

Day one and we are off on our travels. Met the group at Heathrow and straight to the bar!  All 20 of us, bar staff can see £s in their eyes for the tip.

Flying with Qantas on the A380 plane down to Singapore. Paid £50 for an emergency exit seat, well worth it for the extra leg room.

Changi Airport in Singapore is a travellers dream to change planes in, we even had time to go to the Rainforest lounge for a quick shower and change. Quick cuppa and we were back on the onward flight to Perth. I must say on this flight the cabin crew were superb and their service was the best Id had on a flight for many a year.

12th June

Arrived in Perth at 1AM to be picked up to go to the hotel. It wasnt until we were half way there that the driver discovered he had picked up the wrong group!  never mind he took us to the hotel

Sullivans hotel in Perth is a little 3 star gem with 5 star service. Very good size rooms, excellent bar and restauarant and free wifi which is the exception rather than the norm in Aussie.

Perth had just had one of the worst storms and we were advised that night we should be in the hotel or a bar by 1900 as there was another storm on the way. We killed 2 birds with one stone and repaired to the hotel bar! Luckily the storm wasnt as bad although Perth Airport had to suspend flights for a few hours.

Loads of things to do in Perth, good city tour and a must is to go to Fremantle (Freo) to Little Creatures Brewery. On the way back we took the boat which drops you off in the centre of Perth by another good bar the "Lucky Shag"

13th June

The following day it was back to the airport for our 2 and half hour flight to Exmouth up on the coast. Some of the group were worried when they saw a propellor plane but they needed have been. The flight and the onboard service were smooth as silk.

The Novotel at Exmouth was excellent and right on the beach front with superb sunsets. Also at a nearby restaurant the food was superb, better than you get in a fancy city place!

14th June

Today we are off to the reef to see and for some of us to swim with the whale sharks (largest fish in the world). Apart from the 9 metre sea swell (some people were a tad sick) it was a brilliant day, spying whale sharks/humpback whales/manta rays amongst a myriad of other things.

15th June

Transferring down to Coral bay (150km away) but via the Coral Coast, beautiful deserted beaches excellent for families, surfers and more. No crowds either!

Arrived in Coral Bay and the hosts had provided an aussie BBQ for us complete with Aussie footy on TV!

16th June

OMG, we have won the lottery, went out on a catermaran on the reef for a couple of hours. You can sleep on board but they were full for that night! Shame, but we had an excellent day, many thanks to Luke and his Mrs for a memorable day out.

Next stop a glass bottom boat so that the non swimmers can see the reef and its life. great end to the day

17th June

2 hour transfer back to Exmouth airport, no photographs allowed as its an RAAF base!

Arrival into Perth then down to the Esplanade Suites in South Perth, really good size rooms/apartments. Dont have time to appreciate the hotel as we have to be changed and out in less than 30 mins to go to the Perth Convention Centre to register for our conference.

Quick check in then off to the Royal Yacht Club for an evening welcome function, over 1000 people there. They know how to organise "a do"!

Tired but happy we go back to the hotel as the hard work starts tomorrow!

18th June

Early start to convention centre as in 4 days we have appointments with 100 people in 15 mins intervals (a bit like speed dating!)

The next few days pass over in a haze, taking in loads of new and updated information about what Aussie has to offer the traveller, everything from Bridge Climbs/Harley tours/Camel rides even going out to the far flung Christmas and Cocos islands . I must say the girls from the latter were really helpful and enthusiastic about their respective island homes. So much so , four of us are planning to go out there later this year for a holiday.

21st June

missed out blogging 3 days, only so much you can say about work/nighttime functions. Let me just say Perth has a lot to offer the traveller!

Final do and we must say goodbye to old and new friends. Twelve of our group are staying on to do a bit more touring but for eight of us we must go back tomorrow to the cold wet dawn of the UK.

22nd June

Checked in and on our way home, 5 hours to Singapore and then 13 hours back to UK

Again superb flights with Qantas and again pay the $80 (approx £50) for an exit seat. Again the cabin crew were superb.

23rd June

Arrived at heathrow and more sad farewells!

Tube to Kings Cross and then train back home. Again a £15 first class upgrade, well worth it!

Back home now, ready for work and with loads more info to pass on about Aussie.
